Cape Town isn’t only the largest city in South Africa (by area) and also the No.1 international tourist destination on the continent but very likely one of the most beautiful cities in all the world. It is a verdant, lively, cosmopolitan city with a number of the world’s finest beaches and the spectacular beauty of Table Mountain Nature Reserve emerging from its very centre. If you have never visited Africa, there are few better introductions than Cape Town.
## I know next to nothing about Cape Town but I’ve always dreamt of seeing Africa. What’s Cape Town’s history?
Known to explorers such as Vasco da Gama as early as the fifteenth century, Cape Town started off as a supply station for the Dutch East India Company in the seventeenth century and was the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. Changing hands numerous times during the Napoleonic wars it was finally ceded to the British in the Anglo-Dutch treaty of 1814. Cape Town was made the legislative capital of the Union of South Africa in 1910 and then the Republic of South Africa when in 1931 the union was granted independence from the UK. It is one of three capitals in South Africa; Cape Town (Legislative), Pretoria (Executive) & Bloemfontein (Judicial)
## I think of Africa as being very hot. What’s the climate like in Cape Town?
Actually the climate in Cape Town is quite temperate. During the summer months (which is to say January to March) the average temperatures are between 15 and 26 degrees Celsius. The South African summers are quite dry with over 60% of annual precipitation falling between May and August. It’s worth noting that Cape Town lies farther to the south than all major Canadian cities lie to the North.
## How easy is it to get there?
Cape Town International Airport is the third busiest on the continent with many international routes to major cities including London (via Heathrow), Istanbul, Amserdam, Buenos Aires and Singapore to name but a few. Cape Town is also a major cruise ship destination.
